The plot of the film revolves around a bespectacled Taoist priest called Four-eyed Taoist (Anthony Chan) and his neighbour, a Buddhist monk called Master Yat-yau (Wu Ma), who are always at odds with each other. Their respective students, Kar-lok (Chin Kar-lok) and Ching-ching (Loletta Lee), are friendly towards each other. The Taoist and Buddhist play pranks on each other, such as stealing each other's food or setting traps for each other.
One day, a convoy of soldiers escorting a coffin passes by their houses. Inside the convoy is Four-eyed's junior, Taoist Crane (Chung Fat), and Crane's four disciples, as well as a young prince (Hoh Kin-wai) and his bodyguards. Four-eyed and Yat-yau learn from Crane that there is a jiangshi (Chinese "hopping" vampire) in the coffin, and the convoy is on its way to the capital to let the emperor inspect the jiangshi.
During a thunderstorm that night, rainwater washes away the magical charms on the coffin and the vampire breaks out, becoming more powerful after being struck by a bolt of lightning. The vampire starts attacking everyone in the convoy and infecting them with the "vampire virus", causing them to transform into vampires as well after a short time. Taoist Crane remains behind to hold off the vampire while the prince and his attendant flee towards the houses.
At this critical moment, Four-eyed and Yat-yau both decide to put aside their differences and focus on destroying the vampires. They use their respective skills and tools, such as talismans, swords, bells, needles, and firecrackers, to fight against the undead creatures. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles and dangers, such as a vixen spirit (Pauline Wong) who tries to seduce Four-eyed, a group of bandits who try to rob them, and a giant snake that attacks them.
The film is a mix of horror, comedy, action, and romance, with many hilarious scenes and witty dialogues. The film also showcases the different aspects of Chinese culture and folklore, such as Taoism, Buddhism, jiangshi mythology, feng shui, geomancy, and martial arts. The film is full of creative ideas and special effects that make the film entertaining and enjoyable to watch.
The film was well received by critics and audiences alike, and was one of the highest-grossing Hong Kong films of 1988. The film also won several awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Action Choreography for Sammo Hung and Best Supporting Actor for Yuen Wah.
