The iTunes version of the album was released on July 17, 2001, and featured two bonus tracks: "Messed Up" and "Come Over". These songs were originally intended for the soundtrack of the film Romeo Must Die, in which Aaliyah starred alongside Jet Li. However, they were left out of the final cut and later included on the iTunes version of Aaliyah as a special treat for her fans.
The iTunes version of Aaliyah also had a different cover art than the original CD version. The iTunes cover showed a close-up of Aaliyah's face with her eyes closed and her lips slightly parted, while the CD cover showed her sitting on a motorcycle with a leather jacket and sunglasses. The iTunes cover was chosen by Aaliyah's family and friends as a tribute to her beauty and grace.
